Fireworks Displays: Tips About Mortars And Fuses
Some pyro-speak first: A mortar is a tube from which to fire a projectile called a shell. The diameter of the shells (projectile) will determine the size of the mortar. You could use spiral paper mortar tubes or high density polyethylene mortar tubes. Do NOT use PVC from the hardware store.
** Why should you NOT use ordinary PVC tubes from the hardware store?
Should a shell explode in a PVC pipe the PVC splinters like glass into sharp shrapnel shreds. This could be dangerous to yourself and to bystanders. This danger does not exist if you use high density polyethylene mortar tubes.
Tip # 2: The Best Way To Connect One Fuse To Another
The best way is to hold the ends that you want to connect side by side so that the fuse ends overlap by 1 inch (2.5cm) or so. Now use 1 inch (2.5cm) wide masking tape to tie these two overlapping ends tightly together. Winding the masking tape twice around the ends will do. In this way the burning fuse has some length to set the unlit fuse alight.
Tip # 3: How Do I Get Many Devices To Fire Together?
There are different ways of setting off a collection of fireworks:
** Sequential firing where each device fires after the one before.
Line up your fireworks, cut a length of fuse long enough to connect them all and tie each firework to the fuse (without cutting the fuse) by using the masking tape method described above.
** Concurrent firing.
This method is used to fire a group of fireworks at the same time. Connect each device in the group to its own length of fuse by means of masking tape and collect the other ends of all of these fuses in a bundle. Tie these ends in the bundle tightly together with masking tape. To fire, light the whole bundle.
** Combinations.
Its time to be creative! Make a combination of the above firing methods.
These few tips can improve your safety measures and also improve the performance of your show to the delight of the crowds watching you!
The art and science of fireworks is old and many of the practices of today were developed more than a 100 or 200 years ago. If you are serious about creating your own fireworks displays to impress your friends and family, don`t try to re-invent the wheel. Rather be safe and follow the tried and tested methods and projects as described in a good e-book such as "Fireworks and Pyro Projects" written by experienced fireworks experts.
