Lincoln was very vocal about his opposition to the expansion of slavery. Since the southern states were highly dependent on slavery to support their economy, they viewed Lincoln"s election as President as a huge threat to their economic survival.Just after his election the slave states who opposed his views launched an attack on the Union Troops at Fort Sumner. This was the event that initiated the war efforts, a war that would continue for almost four years until the last Confederate Troop surrendered in 1865.
The Emancipation Proclamation was put into effect in 1863, and this freed slaves that were not in territories under the Union control. As Union solders advanced into the Confederate States, more and more Slaves were freed.
Lincoln and the Civil war put an end to slavery. Naturally a riveting game of chess played with Union and Confederate soldier pieces won"t change the face of history but can add some interesting elements to the challenge. When the war erupted in 1861, uniforms for soldiers were provided by a number of different sources, like wealthy families, towns or the state. This left the soldiers with a hodge podge look to their united front. In time, guidelines were put in place and the Union was represented in blue, and the Confederates of the south in grey.
